Good morning,
We continue to stay busy here at the Sheriff's Office. As posted in my last report, deputies have been working the DWI checkpoints around the county. Last weekend, there were five arrests made for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. I have seen very few negative posts about these checkpoints, but I want to address those.
To put this in perspective, five impaired drivers were taken off the highways in Dallas County this past weekend. Those are five drivers that have the potential to kill someone if not stopped. I can't believe anyone would be opposed to this. In my 40-plus-year career, I have seen the carnage left behind due to drinking and operating a vehicle or boat. Law Enforcement officers are the ones who have to deliver the message to loved ones that their family member is not coming home or has been critically injured. Please take a moment and let that sink in. It only takes a few minutes to pass through one of these checkpoints and be on your way if you have no problems.
Circuit court was held here on Wednesday, and it was a very long day. We have a new circuit judge presiding over our courtroom now due to Judge Spencer Singleton being appointed to the federal bench. I want to thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck in his new assignment.
A few cases were settled. They are:
Bernice Frazier pled guilty to Furnishing, Possessing, Using Prohibited Articles, and received 5 years Probation, plus a fine of $2500, and costs
Aletha Broughton pled guilty to Theft of Property and was sentenced to 5 years SIS plus restitution, costs
Rickey Lee Strickland pled guilty to Possession of Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and received 5 years Probation, a $2500 fine, costs
Lavelle Cones pled guilty to Possession of Controlled Substance and DWI, with a 3-year ADC sentence plus costs
Phillips Evans pled guilty to 2 counts of Possession of Controlled Substance and Possession of Firearm by Certain Person and was sentenced to 6 years in the ADC plus costs
Evonne Hall pled guilty to Aggravated Assault and was sentenced to 5 years SIS costs
Douglas Mathews pled guilty to Possession of Firearm by Certain Person and was sentenced to 5 years Probation, a $1000 fine, plus costs
The DWI Checkpoints will continue until September 1st. Be patient as we work diligently to keep our highways safe for travel. If you are going to drink, please stay at home or have a designated driver!
Remember, there is a burn ban in effect for Dallas County!
